Genetically Modified Food Propaganda in Children's books!
It's a simple proposition: Label genetically modified food. If it contains GMOs, tell people about it. Given that Genetically Modified Organisms are an incredibly new part of what we eat, it makes sense that it's labeled.
(I don't mean to support the various attempts by governments to force manufacturers to label food containing GMOs. There are plenty of manufacturers who already write on the label when there are no GMOs in a food, and you can just boycott the other producers until they start labelling and excluding GMOs too. Use of government force runs counter to a free market and is in my opinion immoral.) And if the GMOs are as safe and healthy as we're told by their manufacturers - why would they be so afraid of labeling them?
And why would they need an enormous amount of influence over the U.S. government just to stay in business?
Looking at the list of corporations who don't want you to know whether GMOs are used in the food you eat, I was wondering who one of the top contributors, the Council for Biotechnology Information, really was.
Until a few days ago when a ton of new money came in from Monsanto, DuPont, and a few other corporations, the Council was right at the top.
And by the way, feel free to use that list to boycott all those manufacturers. From Coca Cola and Pepsi to Kellogg, if they're actively giving funds to prevent food labeling, it means they're trying to hide something. An unbelievable amount of brands fall into this category and are owned by someone on that list.
Here's a good list of so-called healthy food brands that are actually owned by companies fighting against food labeling. If you care about your health, the health of the environment, or want to on principle boycott manufacturers that think you shouldn't know what you're eating, please do. You're helping yourself, and sending a clear market signal that this kind of trickery will not stand.
Now onto the meat of the article - genetically modified food propaganda.
Who is the Council for Biotechnology Information?
Touting themselves as founded to "create a public dialogue and share information", I thought that might just be Orwellian double speak.
Sure enough, the organization is responsible for the creation of GMO propaganda (not just information, but complete disinformation) targeted squarely at - you guessed it! - young children.
In this particular book (link is to a PDF), which reads like something out of a dystopian science fiction novel, the following three lies are being pushed on kids:
Here's a screenshot from the book. How evil can these corporations get?
So let's debunk these genetically modified food myths, one by one.
The First Lie - GMOs grow more food.
I used to believe this one for a while. I really did naively think that there was a trade-off between the quantity produced, and the quality of the product. I thought that GMOs were cheaper and more efficient, but that unfortunately they were unsafe.
The truth is that I was wrong. GMOs are less efficient than traditional, organic crops. More than that, they're also more expensive! It makes sense. An industry willing to lie and influence its way to profit despite tremendous health risks and environmental damage cannot possibly be driven by the motivation to save starving people.
Instead, they are very much intent on destroying small farmers by literally suing them to death. An Indian farmer commits suicide every 30 minutes. Still think GMOs are all sunshine and rainbows?
The Second Lie - Genetically Modified Food helps the environment.
Far from helping the environment, GMOs actively disrupt it. Just like the problem of antibiotics which breed resistant super-bugs, GMO crops actually require more pesticides than the natural ones, and as a result, evolution is correcting things by creating new, highly resistant insects.
That they require more pesticides is no mere accident. They were designed that way. Do you think it's a coincidence that all the leading manufacturers of GMOs, like Monsanto and DuPont, also just happen to have been chemicals companies that earned a ton of profit selling pesticides and herbicides?
The only reason they went into Biotech, was to create strains of genetically modified crops that would require MORE pesticides, thereby increasing sales of their main product line. It's so evil, yet simple.
Then there are the superweeds, which by 2010 had already reached 120 million hectares of global coverage. This is a global catastrophe of such epic proportions, I don't even want to imagine what the cleanup would cost. And that's assuming a cleanup is possible. The problem with all of these GMOs is that they're not grown in laboratory conditions, once they're out there - that's it!
Doesn't it make anyone angry that politicians are filling our heads with lies about their global warming scam, but biotech companies are getting away with an actual destruction of our environment, and it seems very few people are even slightly aware of it. You sure won't hear about it on your TV...
Moreover, three minutes with a search engine will reveal that the pesticide Clothianidin, which is highly toxic and kills bees on contact, killed SEVERAL HUNDRED MILLION BEES just in 2008, in something called the German Beekill Incident of 2008. Can someone say genocide?
The fact that bee populations around the world have been plummeting for decades is enough to make any true environmentalist worried. Forget about the global warming scare - what are we going to do without vital cross-pollinating bees?
These biotech companies - Monsanto, DuPont, Bayer, Dow, and Syngenta, have been wrecking havoc on the environment for almost a century. And now they want to brainwash the next generation right from school age.
The Third Lie - Genetically Modified Food is healthy for you.
Why anyone would believe genetically modified food to be healthier than the food humans are used to eating for thousands or millions of years - is beyond me. Especially the crops that produce their own pesticides within their cell structure.
This study performed on rats concludes that:
"Several convergent data appear to indicate liver and kidney problems as end points of GMO diet effects in the above-mentioned experiments. This was confirmed by our meta-analysis of all the in vivo studies published, which revealed that the kidneys were particularly affected, concentrating 43.5% of all disrupted parameters in males, whereas the liver was more specifically disrupted in females (30.8% of all disrupted parameters)."
And other studies have shown that the toxicity directly kills human kidney cells. And this stuff is all over the place. Not just in the food, but in groundwater samples, too.
On a final note - are governments preparing for an ecological holocaust?
Many governments and international associations have seemingly little faith in genetically modified food, or GMOs in general.
Built in 2008, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault is located 800 miles from the North Pole, and contains thousands of "backup" seeds, just in case.
What are they not telling us?
