This song is from the movie Harriet, about Harriet Tubman, an inspirational woman who was born a slave and escaped to freedom, only to come back and free another 70 or so slaves in several daring missions.
What could be a more powerful freedom song than one about slaves standing up and escaping to their freedom?
I particularly like the scene where she says “I’ma be free or die” as she jumps into the river to escape from the slavers.
I also appreciate the pro-gun message when she sings about “A bullet in my gun”. Slavery can never be achieved as long as the people are armed, and as the U.S. government attempts disarmament (and therefore enslavement) of the American people, we need to remember what disarmament would make us.
