Inspired by a new #FreedomMusicFriday series of posts over at The Freedom Scale I’ve realized I also know of several freedom-minded songs that I’d love to share. Not all of these will be about the fight for freedom necessarily - sometimes it’ll be about being red-pilled, or about self-knowledge and peaceful parenting; topics that I think are related to the journey freedom-lovers are on and will appreciate.
Today, I’m starting the series with what I think might be the best rap song I’ve ever heard. The lyrics are phenomenal and I’ve listened to this song dozens of times. I feel like I always get more out of it every time because the lyrics are so dense.
“Once upon a time in an obscure part of the Milky Way Galaxy, there was a spinning ball of water and rock ruled by the forces of evil. The Devil himself, proud of the magnificent achievements of his children, decided to call a special banquet for the greatest thieves in all the land…”
At The Thieves’ Banquet, the devil amasses all the most evil people around the world and they compete to see who has done the greatest harm to humans and freedom. The competitors: third world dictators, monarchs of empire, religious leaders, and the banking cartels.
Akala does a fantastic job of acting as each of these - with the religious leader sounding particularly creepy.
Here’s a short fragment of the lyrics in which the western “democratic” ruler argues that they should win the devil’s prize:
“Everybody knows he’s a criminal element
They think I’m democratic and benevolent
And that shows that I’m really devilish
Cos people think I’m heaven-sent
I couldn’t care about democracy
You all know no one elected me
The people love me despite my crimes…”
Let me know what you think in the comments, or if you have any recommendations of your own!
Excellent installment of #FreedomMusicFriday. It's homegrown, intentional protest music against the forces that would keep us enslaved. Perfect!
