I found myself reading someone’s bio the other day, and after introducing their name, it immediately jumped to their sexual preferences, saying that the man “… is openly gay…”. I think this is a trend - this isn’t the first time I’ve see this. Many actors have their sexual preferences right there in the first paragraph about them.
Does anyone else feel like this is inappropriate?
What if straight people did this? Imagine if you were reading someone’s bio and they wrote “Hi, my name is John Smith, and I like boobs.” or “Hi, my name is Janet, and I enjoy long walks in the park and penises.”
As a libertarian, I’m all for people writing whatever they want. Free speech and all that.
But as a member of this society we’re building every day with our actions, I do wonder if we’re regressing towards some kind of pre-civilized form of interaction, a path towards immaturity.
We also need to think about what this means for children who might be reading this. I don’t think a 10 year-old reading a short biographical page about someone needs to know about that person’s sexual preferences.
What do you think?
The wife and I (we're both in our early sixties) remember that when we were kids, we were both flabbergasted to find out eventually that our teachers were married. Like, they were *our* teachers, and they had a *life*? Different times...
By the way, I like your Stack and your soft-spoken way about things, so I'm binge-reading it, which is why you see me posting comments on past articles.
